Top 4 Books For Those Who Work in Property Management

I am often asked, “What advice do you have for new supervisors?” Instead of “work hard” cliches and platitude sayings, I always recommend these books.
I think most of us who work in property management can agree that the mental side of the business is where we struggle the most. It’s not the work that gets to me. I love the work. It’s the people. So, instead of letting a few bad apples ruin the work I love to do, I went on a search for great books on how to deal with not only the people but the whole frame of mind needed to be the best I can be. From mindset to making sure I have something to show for all this towards the end of my journey.
While these 4 books are not books about the property management industry, I’m confident that they will restore your love of the property management business and keep your mental health and your personal finances on track.
                                                              Book #1
I’d like to start with the one and only book you’ll need on leadership and how to deal with difficult people. Although “How to Win Friends and Influence People” is 75 years old, it’s still the best book out there on the subject. Don’t buy into “the new truths on leadership” you see a lot of today. Selling “new truths” is like someone trying to sell you new antiques. In this book, you’ll learn from the greatest minds in history on how to deal with argumentative, rude, and downright arrogant people who get unleashed onto the world daily and those who live to complain.

                                                 Book #2
This book is a fantastic book to keep in the side drawer of your desk or in your glove compartment. This book is a quick fix after Mrs. Johnson from apartment 107 leaves the office after her weekly 20 minute whine-a-thon about how, “The property has been going downhill”. How is it a quick fix? It’s not long drawn out chapters. The book is short burst of positivity that are a page long. So, instead of reaching into your side drawer and whipping out a flask for a quick swig, whip this little book out and remember to not sweat the small stuff.

                                                              Book #3

Are you good at what you do in the property management industry but get the feeling that you should be doing something else? Like, following your passion maybe? If this is you, this book will snap you back to reality. Now, I’m not saying don’t follow your passion. What I’m saying is, make sure you can pay your bills before you go wandering off into, “I’m going to follow my passion” land. What I’ve learned from this book is that if your passion doesn’t solve people’s problems, then your passion won’t pay the bills. This book has a great story about how employees got so good at their job that their employers would do anything to keep them. Whether it be more money or more flexibility and freedom.

                                                              Book #4

If the stuff above doesn’t interest you, I hope this does. And, that is to have something to show for all your hard work. Don’t get to the end of your journey and have nothing to show for it. This book “The Total Money Makeover” was the book that started my financial journey and I can proudly say that I have an F.U. fund that not only helps me sleep like a baby but also allows no one to bully me at work. If I feel like I’m being mistreated and the office doesn’t have my back, I can leave at the drop of a hat and my “F@#k You” fund will keep me afloat for months. This book will show you how to get that and it’s the best feeling in the world.
